My last year could have been 1980..It has been so long. The main areas that I took care of were the monkey house, the bears and other areas as needed. I would have been there to the end, but I had a big blow out with Connie and that was the end of my Benson's career. When I first started at... (more)

Hi! I miss Benson's...I bought my house from Aurthur P. in 1982 (this was a Benson's property) and watched as the train station was moved from the property to the park! The property was subdivided and sold (we bought 5 Greeley). I spent much of my time at Benson's and have quite a history with... (more)

Andy- I get it all now. I thought that you were the Andy that was on the zoo crew in '81 and I just found out that there were TWO Jackies so I must be thinking of Jackie #2 (who was a 4 year old African when I left)and Andy #2, who, if I remember correctly, worked with Mika with the hoof stock... Hi Kathy - I only worked there in the summer of 79, and I was there with Tammy Miller on that early morning when Jackie died. Tammy's dad was Whitey Baker, who had been one of the elephant trainers. I'm pretty sure of the year, since I only worked that one summer. Aurthur had the copyright for... (more)

Charlie, I've often wondered what became of Bruce is too. He did go to York and so did Mika and Alcia. But that was so long ago now. What department (animals) did you work in? I have a group picture of the zoo keepers from 1981 with all their names and I don't see yours.

Hey Andy, So good to hear from a fellow former keeper. Just read your post about Jackie. I had no idea that she passed and in such a sad way. She was so sweet. Hope that you had a chance to see Queen & Liz at the sanctuary before we lost Queenie too. But I have a question.........are you mistaken... (more)

Jackie the elephant passed away the summer of 1979. She had been left outside overnight, and had spent the night standing in a pond. In the morning, she was in such distress that the zoologist Pat Quinn had to put her down. I remember talking to Aurthur that morning and he was quite distraught. He... (more)

I worked at Benson's from '79 to '81. I started in what was the new Beer Garden directly overlooking the elephant ring where they performed two shows a day. I really wanted to work with the animals but then again, so did everyone else. When an opening came up in the elephant department I asked... (more)

She died in 1971. Later, there was an African elephant, named Jackie, who died unexpectedly on July... (more)
